I jsut finished Nora Roberts' Sign of Seven trilogy.

And this suddenly came to me:

How come the guys and the girls in fiction (especially romantic fiction) are always perfect?

In the Sign of Seven trilogy for example, there are three couples, with three cute guys and three pretty ladies.

The guys are generally tall, muscular (or of perfect physique), while the girls are pretty, sultry, and attention-grabbing.

Really, it's too much of a coincidence that three childhood friends turned out to be cute guys (and they're all descendants of an ancient guradian too). Why can't one of them be underweight? Or short?

Meanwhile, the girls, who coincidentally were descendants of the evil, were all pretty pretty ladies. How come not one of the girls was chubby? Or overweight?

Why is that?

In real life, not all couples are made up of beautiful people, and not all friends are usually good looking.

For example?

Easy. Just imagine your class back in high school.

How many cute guys were there in the class?

And in a crowd of guy friends, how many of them are good-looking?

Chances are, only a few of the guys would be good-looking.

Nothing to say of attitude. How many cute guys are not jerks (not that I'm saying ALL cute guys are jerks, mind you).

In real life, let's face it, not everyone is good-looking.

There are short, tall, fat, chubby, awkward, silent, gangly, guys.

For girls, some are scrawny, chubby, short, tall, fat, wide, thin, anorexic.

Really, not everyone is attention-grabbing and macho-looking.

So why is it in fiction the characters are usually good-looking?

One book in which the character isn't so perfect (that I have read) is Linda Howard's Son of the Morning, in which the heroine was a chubby, nerdy, academician. But she turned to be scrawny, since she had to run away from murderers.

There are other books like this one too, but the number can be counted with one hand. At least, the books that I've read lah.

Other than that, the heroines are usually pretty, pretty ladies.

And the heroes are usually handsome, handsome rogues.
